Doesn't feel like cowardice in JD's case. It feels like cynical opportunism, with no principle he won't compromise for power and influence.

From Wikipedia: “the commanding officer of the Der Führer regiment of the Das Reich division had wanted to destroy another French town, Oradour-sur-Vayres, whose people were said to be providing food and shelter to the maquis, but had taken a wrong turn on the road, which led him and his men to Oradour-sur-Glane, whose people had never supported the maquis”

There are 35 kms and a major river between the two locations... so a bit more than a wrong turn was necessary. But yes, locally, they say that the germans mixed up the two villages.

I'm not so sure that it was that important, as the exact same germans had hung to die 19 people in Tulle on june 9th, 110km to the south of Oradour after a insurgent attack the day before

Robert Paxton thinks we have been invaded, defeated and occupied by the reactionary half of our population? Sounds like something a Communist insurgent would say. The American public was simply sick and tired of unhinged, radical Left ideology being shoved down our throats from 2020 to 2024. Voting for Trump in 2024 was the only way to push back.

I'm not firm on my TV rankings but I think The Wire and Un Village Francais are best. Others go on and off the list as I think about stuff. Shows like Engrenages, The Shield, Deadwood, and Mad Men had truly excellent episodes or character arcs, but they also had quite a lot that wasn't consistently good. There's also stuff like Prime Suspect 3, that is more of a miniseries than a television show.

Un village Francais is my second favorite piece of television ever.

It's pedantic to say that, there's been no war, so we can't draw parallels between the United States and Vichy France.

Except for those who are cheering because their guy's in power now, most Americans have lost faith in their government and society and remain deeply disillusioned.

Average people are sitting on the sidelines, and it's unclear whether they'll eventually support or condemn the current regime.

Certainly there's no organized resistance of any kind. We have our Petain who's a thousand times worse than the historical Petain, but we have no De Gaulle.
